Is Our Tawakal Really Already?



Tawakal has a very high position in Islam. In fact, Allah associates it with worship as in His word,

فَاعْبُدْهُ وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَيْهِۗ

"So worship Him and put your trust in Him." (QS. Hud: 123)

Allah Ta'ala made this trust as a reason to get His love. he said,

اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَوَكِّلِيْنَ

"Indeed, Allah loves those who put their trust in." (QS. Al-Imran: 159)

The apostles are the foremost people and human leaders in terms of trust in Allah Ta'ala. Prophet Ibrahim ' alaihissalam said,

رَبَّنَا عَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْنَا وَاِلَيْكَ اَنَبْنَا وَاِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيْرُ

"O our Lord, only in You do we put our trust, only in You do we repent, and only to You do we return." (QS. Al-Mumtahanah: 4)

Prophet Shuaib ' alaihissalam also said,

وَمَا تَوْفِيْقِيْٓ اِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ ۗعَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَاِلَيْهِ اُنِيْبُ

“And the instructions that I follow are only from Allah. To Him I put my trust and to Him (also) I return." (QS. Hud: 88)

Tawakal is the main key to the realization of desires, hopes and dreams. Because Allah Ta ' ala promises to be sufficient for those who put their trust in Him. Allah Ta'ala says,

وَمَنْ يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُ

“And whoever puts his trust in Allah, Allah will fulfill his (needs).  (QS. At-Talaq: 3)

The true essence of trust

Then, what is the right tawakal?

The essence of true trustworthiness is to carry out the causes that exist while still relying on Allah Ta'ala . Convinced that everything is under His will. If Allah wills, then Allah will make it happen and grant it. And if Allah does not wish, then this will not materialize and will not be granted.

A true believer, will not surrender his affairs totally just to the cause (working hard and believing that his success can only be achieved by his own hard work) without the intervention of Allah Ta'ala.

The true believer also does not only rely on the destiny of Allah Ta'ala and underestimate effort and hard work. The true believer has a middle and wise attitude. He will try to live the causes that exist, work hard, then leave all the results to Allah Ta'ala.

Allah commands us to take the cause and go through the steps (cause) that exist. Among them Allah Ta'ala says,


وَاَعِدُّوْا لَهُمْ مَّا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِّنْ قُوَّةٍ وَّمِنْ رِّبَاطِ الْخَيْلِ تُرْهِبُوْنَ بِهٖ عَدُوَّ اللّٰهِ وَعَدُوَّكُمْ وَاٰخَرِيْنَ مِنْ دُوْنِهِمْۚ لَا تَعْلَمُوْنَهُمْۚ 


"And prepare with all your might to face them with the strength that you have and from cavalry that can terrify the enemies of Allah, your enemies, and people besides them that you do not know." (QS. Al-Anfal: 60)

Our Prophet, Muhammad shallallahu 'alaihi wasallam is the best role model in terms of carrying out causes and putting his trust in Allah Ta'ala . His balance and middle-aged attitude was clearly seen in his hijrah journey to Medina.

See how perfect his plan is? How careful was he to come out to meet Abu Bakr at an unusual time so that people would not see him?

In fact, he hired a person who was skilled and experienced in knowing the road map and the desert to help him get out of Mecca, even though that person was a polytheist. He planned everything carefully and cleverly.

All that he did with the condition of being sure that Allah Ta'ala would help him and help him!

In fact, he even said,


لَوْ أَنَّكُمْ كُنْتُمْ تَوَكَّلُونَ عَلَىٰ اللهِ حَقَّ تَوَكُّلِهِ لَرُزِقْتُمْ كَمَا يُرْزَقُ الطَّيْرُ تَغْدُو خِمَاصًا وَتَرُوحُ بِطَانًا


“If you really put your trust in Allah with true trust, you will be given sustenance (by Allah Ta'ala), just as a bird is given sustenance. He goes out in the morning hungry, and comes back in the evening full." (HR. Tirmidhi no. 2344, Ibnu Majah no. 4164 and Ahmad no. 205)

Birds that incidentally don't have any sense, the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam told them to go out in the morning and come back in the afternoon to get food. Then, what about us reasonable?! Of course trying and taking the cause should have been firmly rooted in us.

It is wrong and wrong if someone thinks that the meaning of tawakal is total surrender to Allah Ta'ala , without the need to try and look for reasons to achieve goals. Want to be successful and have wealth, but all he does is pray to Allah without working. This is really a wrong assumption.

Put your trust in the sweet fruit properly

The right tawakal will calm the soul and stabilize the situation. With this sense of trust, a believer can free himself from depending on and relying on others. Syaikhul Islam Ibn Taimiyyah Rahimahullah said,


وَمَا رَجَا أَحَدٌ مَخْلًوْقًا أَوْ تَوَكَّلَ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا خَابَ ظَنُّهُ فِيْهِ



"No one hopes for creatures or depends on them, unless he will be disappointed in them." Al-Fatawa, 10: 257)

Who surrenders all his affairs to Allah Ta'ala , then indeed he will get all his desires.

Look at how Prophet Zakaria ' alaihissalam , even though he had reached a very old age and his wife was found to be infertile, Allah gave them a very noble child, a child who would later become one of the Prophets sent by Allah Ta'ala.

See also how when Prophet Ibrahim ' alaihissalam left his wife Hajar and son Ismail in a barren valley where there was no water or any plants. Then, Allah destined this child to become a noble prophet, a prophet who is very devoted to his parents.

Really all of that, none other than the magnitude of their trust in Allah Ta'ala . The level of faith that is difficult for all of us to reach today. Imam Fudhail Rahimahullah once said,

لَوْ يَئِسْتَ مِنَ الخَلْقِ لَا تُرِيْد مِنْهُمْ شَيْئًا لَأَعْطَاكَ مَوْلَاكَ كُلُّ مَا تُرِيْدُ

"If you stop expecting from creatures and want nothing from them, then your God will give you whatever you want."

So, hang your desires only on Allah Ta'ala , hope in Him, surrender all your affairs to Him, stop expecting too much from creatures and don't depend on them.

Know, O my brother, if our hope and trust in Allah Ta'ala strengthens, and the prayers we offer are full of sincerity and seriousness; then really hope we will not be denied.

Allah Ta'ala says,


اَمَّنْ يُّجِيْبُ الْمُضْطَرَّ اِذَا دَعَاهُ وَيَكْشِفُ السُّوْۤءَ وَيَجْعَلُكُمْ خُلَفَاۤءَ الْاَرْضِۗ ءَاِلٰهٌ مَّعَ اللّٰهِ ۗقَلِيْلًا مَّا تَذَكَّرُوْنَۗ

"Isn't He (Allah) the one who allows (prayers) people who are in trouble when he prays to Him, and eliminates distress and makes you (humans) as caliphs (leaders) on earth? Is beside Allah there is (another) god? You remember very little (of Allah's favors). (QS. An-Naml: 62)
